Why Pink Geraniums Are Perfect for Containers

Pink geraniums are one of the best flowers for container gardening, especially if you want something low-maintenance that still looks full and colorful.

They bloom all summer with minimal care

They come in a range of shades – from soft blush pink to bold hot pink. They even look great together as you can see from my picture above!

They handle full sun and heat better than many annual flowers. Watering is easier and geraniums aren’t water divas (where they look half dead because they are a little thirsty).

Deer and rabbits usually leave them alone. That is really important in my yard.

They pair easily with trailing plants and fillers for full container designs. The spiller plants are often a beautiful contrast.

If you’re just getting started with container gardening, geraniums are one of the safest choices you can make. They are fabulous when planted with other plants but also look great when planted on thier own!

Ideas from My Garden

Here are a few of my favorite ways I’ve used pink geraniums in containers. These are simple combinations you can easily recreate.

Using a White Pot or Container

It doesn’t always even have to be a pot. I love how these have a great look when placed on a stand that used to be a part of a bathroom sink!

This is a classic combination that always looks clean and cheerful.

The bright pink flowers really stand out against a white ceramic pot, making this perfect for a front porch or entryway. I added variegated vinca vine for a soft trailing effect.

Use a Black Container for Color Contrast

I love the contrast in this planter. Once it fills in, it is just beautiful. Along with the pink geraniums, there are yellow million bells, white alysum, and a light purple and white verbena.

The combination of pink geraniums, dusty miller, and trailing flowers also works really well with this planter.

Hanging Basket with Pink Flowers and Ivy

If you have a sunny spot, this is one of the easiest hanging basket combinations.

The geraniums give you height and color, while the ivy trails down and fills out the shape. It looks full quickly and keeps blooming all season.

Large Patio Container with Mixed Plants

This is one of my go-to formulas for a full, balanced container.

Pink geraniums work as the focal point, a fun million bell type plant that adds bright contrast and will drape, and white alyssum fills in the gaps. This combination grows quickly and handles summer heat well.

Tips for Growing Healthy Geraniums in Pots

Getting great results with geraniums is mostly about keeping things simple.

Use a quality potting mix that drains well

Water when the top inch of soil is dry – avoid letting them completely dry out.

Remove faded blooms regularly to keep new flowers coming

Fertilize every couple of weeks during the growing season

Place containers in full sun for best results

If your geraniums start looking leggy mid-summer, don’t be afraid to trim them back slightly. They’ll bounce back quickly. A little dose of diluted fertilizer helps them recover from the trim.

As a feature plant, geraniums fill out your container nicely as it grows.

What to Plant with Pink Geraniums

Pink geraniums are very easy to mix with other plants. If you want that full, layered container look, try pairing them with:

Trailing ivy or vinca vine. I also find an alyssum that drapes down the planter.

Sweet potato vine – chartreuse or deep purple both work. These are the easiest plants to grow and have such a beautiful contrast. They grow so well, I often trim them because they start getting too long and full (really easy to do).

White alyssum for a soft filler.

Dusty miller for contrast and texture.

Calibrachoa or petunias for extra color. Just an fyi, calibrachoa is the botanical name for million bells.

This gives you a simple thriller, filler, spiller effect without overcomplicating things.

FAQs

Can you grow pink geraniums in hanging baskets?

Yes, and they do very well. Just make sure the basket gets plenty of sun and include a trailing plant so it looks full.

Do pink geraniums need full sun?

They perform best with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. More sun usually means more blooms.

Can I keep geraniums for next year?

Yes. You can bring them indoors for the winter or take cuttings in the fall to start new plants.
